MEDfx announced today that it has successfully demonstrated the power of connected healthcare in partnership with federal agencies and civilian healthcare organizations under the Virtual Lifetime Electronic Records (VLER) initiative for veterans and US military personnel. The VLER program provides electronic medical records for veterans and military personnel and empowers healthcare professionals with universal, secure access to complete medical histories via the Nationwide Health Information Network (NwHIN). It also eliminates the need for veterans and US military personnel to obtain, copy and personally transport physical medical records. The program demonstrates the transformative power of digital health information exchange in improving outcomes.
MEDfx, a pioneer in the connected healthcare sector that has contributed engineering and architectural assets to the NwHIN initiative from its inception, facilitates the use of VLER by supporting secure clinical data exchange via the company’s CONNECTfx and Lifescape products. CONNECTfx enables the flow of information transactions, accommodates multiple electronic document types (including PDFs), supports CMS meaningful use criteria and enables healthcare organizations to securely share electronic health information with numerous federal agencies, including the VA, Social Security Administration, Department of Defense and CMS. Lifescape is a connected health portal that enables access to a unified view of patient health data across multiple geographies and data sources, delivering query tools and connecting healthcare professionals to the NwHIN.
MEDfx has worked closely with MedVirginia, a leading health information organization, to provide gateway services that allow healthcare providers to connect with other NwHIN participants. By using MEDfx Lifescape to access VLER data, civilian providers participating with MedVirginia can instantly view their patients’ medical history at the VA or military health systems. In addition, these gateway services allow VA and military providers to view medical records from civilian providers. This bi-directional capability improves clinical decision-making, reduces medical errors and unnecessary duplication of diagnostic tests, and delivers fast access to lab results and other vital information pertinent to the patient’s care.
